Barrister Jacqueline Vallejo was ordered to be suspended from practice for four months by an independent disciplinary tribunal meeting on 15 June 2022, following a charge of professional misconduct brought by the Bar Standards Board (BSB).
The tribunal found that Miss Vallejo had failed to observe her duty to the court in the administration of justice by repeatedly behaving in a rude and unprofessional manner towards a trial Judge during a hearing.
Commenting on the order to suspend Miss Vallejo from practice, a BSB spokesperson said: “Hearings can often be stressful and challenging and barristers must be able to defend their clients robustly. However, the conduct of the barrister in this case went beyond robustness and interfered with the administration of justice. The seriousness of this behaviour is reflected in the Tribunal’s sanction of suspension from practice.”
The tribunal’s decision is open to appeal.

The Bar Tribunals and Adjudication Service (BTAS) is responsible for appointing and administering Disciplinary Tribunals on behalf of the President of the Council of the Inns of Court and its tribunals are independent of the BSB. The BSB is responsible for bringing charges of professional misconduct against barristers, which BTAS tribunal panels then adjudicate. The sanctions imposed are a matter for the tribunal having regard to the facts of the individual case and the BTAS Sanctions Guidance.
